Sonkanch – Thewa & Silver Jewellery
Sonkanch is a Jaipur brand that makes handcrafted Thewa and silver jewellery. The name joins two Hindi words, sona (gold) and kaanch (glass) — the two materials of Thewa, a 400-year-old Rajasthani art. Every piece is made by hand and IGI-certified.
The People Behind Sonkanch
Vinita and Amber Malviya built Sonkanch as the ready-to-wear ("pret") collection of Thewa jewellery. Their work rests on three things: uncompromising quality, handcrafted design, and complete transparency with every customer who visits our Jaipur showroom.
Vinita Malviya
Vinita rebranded Sonkanch in Jaipur and leads its design. An entrepreneur with a background in education and a mother of twins, she brought a fresh design approach to a craft that had rarely been reimagined for modern retail.
Her eye for contemporary Indian design shapes every Sonkanch collection and makes Thewa jewellery easy to wear today.
Amber Malviya
Amber co-founded Sonkanch alongside Vinita. He is also part of Malvia Exports, a handicraft export house established in 2001.
With more than two decades of experience in manufacturing and exports, Amber brings extensive industry expertise to Sonkanch. This strong foundation is at the heart of the brand’s commitment to quality, transparency, and reliability.
What Is Thewa Art?
Thewa is a Hindi word that means “setting”. It is the art of fusing 23K gold onto coloured glass. The craft began in Pratapgarh, Rajasthan, around 400 years ago in the Mughal era, and it is still practised by the Rajsoni family of artisans, who have passed the skill down through generations. Here is how a piece of Thewa jewellery is made:
Beaten
Beating the metal: Artisans hammer a small chunk of high-purity 23-karat gold into an ultra-thin sheet.
Etched
The artisan lightly etches freehand narrative motifs into the gold using a sharp, pointed metal scriber.
Fused
The glass surface is melted just enough so that the gold sheet sinks slightly and fuses permanently into the molten glass.
Set
Thewa Glass is framed in silver gold-plated casing using gentle taps from a small mallet.
Helping Revive a Dying Art
Thewa has about 400 years of history, yet it has come close to disappearing. Only a few Rajsoni artisan families in Pratapgarh still practise it by hand. Sonkanch exists to change that by taking this rare Rajasthani craft to buyers across India and abroad, so Thewa is valued as fine art and not remembered only as folklore.
